End-of-Year Progress Report 2016

The year has come to an end, and 2016 is about to transition into 2017.  The year was NOT a good one for me.  Good riddance.  It was just as bad, if not worse, than 2015.

I was hospitalized about three times (once for a panic attack, twice for issues with Kidney stones), continued to suffer financially, and had a few prospects crash and burn.  I've continued to cut off phony people from my life, and made plans to relocate.  I'm hoping to enact those plans after the new year.  Fuck New York, and the rotten, negative energy that's here surrounding me. It's too gentrified, and phony out here; nuccas ain't about shit.  There's no originality, and Brooklyn has lost its soul.  It's not a city of trend setters, but trend followers; buncha blind ass, oreo-assed sheeple.

Of the GOOD that has happened to me (very little)...I dropped my seventh book back in April, a short story anthology, titled Drum Speaking: Tales From an Inner City Griot (CreateSpace, 2016).  I participated on a panel at the Bronx Book Fair, and was able to help support a few friends at some of their panel discussions, or other literary events.  I was also able to volunteer at the Brooklyn Book Festival, and represent for Caribbean Cultural Theatre.  Being at those festivals made me miss being on the festival/convention/book fair circuit, and want to get back to that.  Hopefully, once I relocate and get back on my feet, I'll be able to do that again.

I've recently completed one of my many manuscripts that I've been working on.  I've been going through the editing phase as of late for the past two months. I was originally going to wait until 2018 to publish it, but I might decide to release this project by the middle of 2017.  It's called "Seductra: Web of Desire".  I've already created the cover for it, and am continuing with the editing.  If I decide to release it this coming new year, I'll probably publish it in June to coincide with the publishing anniversary of Demure Nights (CreateSpace, 2015), as the books are similar in subject matter (erotica/street lit).

I'm hoping for a better 2017.  I'm putting as much mental energy for this positive transition as possible; 2 1/2 years of suffering is enough.  I should have trusted my instincts that told me not to return to New York; there was a reason why I left in the first place. On to greener pastures, and better people who will actually support you, and not just talk a bunch of shit, and only press the "like" button, and call it a day.

Reflections: My 200th Blog Post

I wanted to do something for my 200th blog post, but I couldn't really find a topic to talk about.  So, naturally, I'll just reflect on this blog, and my writing career in general.

It's been at least five years since I started this blog.  I started it in conjunction with the release of my second book, Raise Your Brown Black Fist 2: MORE Political Shouts of an Angry Afro Latino (Outskirts Press, 2011), back in 2011.  I did it as a way to supplement my writing career, and to help promote my political activism (as well as my books).  I can't really say how successful I've been since starting this blog, but I have surprisingly been able to reach a number of people that I never even knew existed, or expected to know that I existed.  I've posted excerpts, thoughts, rants, reports, and promoted numerous events (as well as my book releases) on this blog.  I'm surprised to have reached 200 posts, considering how skeptical I was at starting a blog.  I didn't want it to be something that I was inconsistent with, and rarely participated in; that would bode badly for me, and my writing career.  But, here I am, promoting my 200th post.  That's tenacity for you.

The journey was long.  I've always wanted to artistically express myself, ever since I was a child.  I thought that I'd found my calling during my junior high school years back in the mid 80s, when I'd wanted to be a comic book artist/writer.  Of course, reality slapped me in the face really hard back then; at that time, you only had the big two to work for, and it was very hard to get into either company.  Image hadn't been formed yet, and Vertigo, Dark Horse, and Valiant Comics were just starting up, and trying to make a name for themselves.  Not to mention, my artwork just didn't measure up to what was out there imho, especially compared to the comics that I collected.  That dream died a horrible death.

My next incarnation as a writer was that of a screen writer.  I'd actually fallen into that by accident.  I was definitely feeling lost, having lost my ambition to be a comic book artist/writer, and basically floated by the next few years.  It was the result of a class assignment for one of my business classes (I'd attended a vocational high school) during junior year, in which we were supposed to write an advertisement for a product. My product...?  A commercial for a TV sitcom.  My project impressed my teacher so much, she suggested to me that, if I chose to attend college, that I should take up Communications (Film & Television, specifically) because she though that I would really be able to excel in that field creatively.  Thoroughly excited, that was what I pursued.  I'd basically spent (or, should I say, wasted?) the rest of my teens and 20s pursuing that goal.  I'd written about this in my third book In My Lifetime: funny Stories of Life Experiences (Outskirts Press, 2014).  I've written dozens of scripts; feature-length films, episodic television (hour long dramas, sitcoms), and even a few animated series.  The only problem was trying to get my projects produced.

You see...film making/television production is very much a collaborative effort, meaning that you need the help of others to produce your project.  I'd held up my end of the bargain by being the story teller; it was now up to the other person to help push that story along.  I'd reached out to everyone that I could; agents, screenwriting contests, independent production companies created by Black actors...no dice on any of those fronts.  I even tried to work with knuckleheads that took classes at DFA (Digital Film Academy), or at the New York Film Academy.  I wasn't some snob who was above doing a guerrilla-style production with a (fellow) novice filmmaker; I just wanted to see my script become a reality on the big screen.  Unfortunately, no one bit; I kept running into arrogant-assed, Oreo filmmakers who thought that they were better than me, even though they had absolutely no resume to backup their ego.  By the time my early 30s hit, I was done with the whole thing.  I moved out of New York, and headed for greener pastures....

I moved down south (Virginia, to be exact), and spent the next eight years there.  I got more involved in activism, and started doing some other writing.  I'd worked for an online magazine (that I basically put on the map with my writing), and worked closely with the local chapter of a Pan African organization.  I'd gotten involved with other writers (novelists, this time), and learned a great deal about the publishing industry.  I ended up having a falling out with the people at the e-magazine I wrote for, and ended up quitting/"got fired" as the result of a nasty falling out, and eventually left the local chapter of that Pan African organization.  After writing a few online posts on Facebook, I eventually learned about P.O.D. publishing, and published my first book Raise Your Brown Black Fist: The Political Shouts of an Angry Afro Latino (Authorhouse, 2010).  From that point on, I'd left Virginia for Maryland, spent four more years out there, and then eventually moved back to New York in 2014 with three books, and a focus to become a fulltime writer.

Things haven't gone exactly the way that I wanted them to the last few years.  Honestly, I've struggled.  A LOT!!!  MIGHTILY!!!  People who I thought were my friends, ended up not being friends, and have been summarily cut off.  The good thing that I can say about this experience, is that I've created more books, furthering my writing career.  I enjoy being a writer; I just hate the nonsupport, and phony people.  You work your ass off to promote your projects, and people tend to brush you off like a child doing some busy work to stay out of their face, never paying you any mind.

So now...I'm working on another book project, and am focusing on relocating to another city.  I'm hoping to be out of here after the new year of 2017.  My luck always did improve when I was living in another city outside of New York.  Off to better and more opportunities, and better, greener pastures.  Wish me luck...and buy a few copies of my books.

Keep the fist raised!!!!

Holiday Economic Support Initiative Part II---Winter Solstice/Xmas/Kwanzaa Edition

***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE***

Brooklyn, Ny.--Wanting to work in conjunction with the #BlackLivesMatter Movement, as well as being inspired by the #Missing24 and the #BuyTheBlock Movements/cyber initiatives, author/activist Kevin Alberto Sabio wants to implore an economic call to action and justice.  During this holiday season of the Winter Solstice, Xmas, and Kwanzaa, as a way for us to combat these political acts of racism, white supremacy, and disrespect, let us tackle these issues on an economic front as well, as you are all respectfully requested to PLEASE spend your money...not with mega corporations and big box stores...but by supporting black-owned businesses, and with Black/Brown entrepreneurs (local, & otherwise).  Let us use our pocketbooks and wallets to politically speak for us, as you can get involved in the movement, and help to support it economically.  If you are not the type to be marching in the streets, then let your dollars do the talking for you.

Let us stand up against injustice, racism, hatred, and intolerance.  Let us choose NOT to financially support this system that oppresses us.  Let us divest from the current economic power structure, and invest/re-invest in our community businesses and local entrepreneurs.  Mr. Sabio would like to include his own literary works into this movement.

Mr. Sabio is independently published through various P.O.D. publishers, and his literary works are available in paperback format through his various publishers' website(s), and through online carriers such as Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and Books-a-Million.  His books are also available in eBook format, and are available through carriers such as Kindle, Nook, Kobo, iTunes, Page Foundry, Scribd, and 24Symbols.  Digital ARCs (Advance Review Copies) of his novels are available in PDF format for review purposes upon request.

KEVIN ALBERTO SABIO is an author and activist, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.  He is the youngest child on Honduran Garifuna immigrant parents.  He is the founder of the Universal Africana Literary Arts Movement.  He is the author of SEVEN books of fiction and nonfiction.

Cultural Caravan Interview airdate: November 20, 2016

My interview that I shot for "Cultural Caravan" aired on Sunday, November 20, 2016.  The interview aired at 5:30pm on WNYC-TV Ch 25.1 (over air), and Ch. 22 (Cablevision) on cable.  I was unaware of the airdate until the day before. I'd received a phone call and an email from the show's producer on Saturday to inform me of the show's airing.

Cultural Caravan is also rebroadcasted on Cablevision's BRIC Media cable access channel Ch. 68 during the week.  Since you probably missed it when it aired last night, you will have an opportunity to catch it during the week on cable access.  I am unaware if they have uploaded the video to their website yet, or on their YouTube channel.

Just wanted to let you guys know about it.  Please check it out if you can.

Nothing.......

Honestly....I have NOTHING to report.

Really. Seriously.  Truthfully.

There is absolutely nothing for me to report to you guys.  Everything is at a stand still.  No sales to report...no job prospects...no anniversaries coming up...nada.  I don't even know when the hell that episode of my interview is going to air; I still haven't been contacted back by the show's producer who interviewed me.  Considering that the show airs every Sunday, there are only two more Sundays left in the month.  Not very inspiring that my episode is going to air this month.

Nothing on the job front, either.  Considering that gamble that I took back in August, basically taking a one-way trip out of state for a job interview, you would've thought that something might have resulted from that.  Didn't get that particular job, nor anything else much after that.  Oh, I've applied to a good number of jobs out there, but nothing really resulted from it.  I got like....one call back for a position, and nothing else since.  Looks like my relocation plans are on hold, as well...

Trying to finish writing my manuscripts that are WIP, but I'm not necessarily motivated to finish them.  Wtf is the point?!  Finish writing them...publish them...and then have them languish on cyber bookshelves for the rest of their existence...?  Nuccas can come out of pocket for some stupid shit like the latest smartphone (that they don't need), a video game/gaming system, shoes, handbag, and other crap they don't need, that's EXPENSIVE as all hell mind you....but y'all can't invest in my mf book that costs between $10-$15....?  What's the sense in publishing them, then?!?!  I don't want to hear your bs rhetoric about supporting me, and then all you do is press the mf 'like' button on social media, and call it a day.  If you're truly a fan of my work, and support me, BUY my books!  And don't just buy one title....buy at least three, or four of them; THEN you can call yourself my biggest fan.

Yes....I'm ranting.  This is frustrating.  I've been dealing with this struggle for over two years, trying to be a fulltime author.  It's sickening when you're not supported, and people make excuses.  Or, when people do give you support, it's actually quite minimal, and they make it seem like they did you such a big favor.  I would understand if I was a crappy writer with no talent; I shouldn't even bee in the game.  BUT....I'm talented, and have skills.  I know how to market and promote myself, and my works.  I've been doing that for most of my life, specifically through my activism.

Maybe things will start to look up by the end of the year.  Who knows....

Upcoming TV Interview

It's finally been confirmed.  I will be appearing on the local access television show called "Cultural Caravan".  I will be shooting my episode this coming Saturday, the 29th.  Hopefully, it will be airing the following weekend.  The show airs out here in NYC on WNYC Ch. 25-1.  I believe that they also rebroadcast on cable access out here on Cablevision Ch. 68.  I don't know any of the other channels that they broadcast out here on cable, just that they are also on Time Warner Cable, Verizon, and I believe RCN.  On WNYC Ch. 25-1 they air every Sunday at 5:30pm.

I will be appearing on the show talking about my first two books "Raise Your Brown Black Fist", and talking about Afro Latino issues and affairs.  Really looking forward to this interview; hopefully, it's the start to better things in my life.  I've been reaching out to many of the media outlets here since my return, and I finally got a callback.

Wish me luck!!!!  I'll post back here when I get the exact air date for the interview.

Stay tuned!!!  :-D

Updates and info....

So, my birthday is coming up this coming Saturday, on October 8th.  I will be turning 42 years old.....

The job that I was originally applying for in Delaware fell through.  For whatever reason, they chose not to hire me though I was CLEARLY very qualified for the position.  Oh well, back to the drawing board.  Been searching for job on Indeed.com, and Craigslist.org.  I've actually recently gotten a response back.  Keeping my fingers crossed...

Continuing to work on my literary projects.  Working on three novels as I type this blog out.  They're going very well, and I should be finished with the first draft of one of them soon.  Of course, I'm not planning on publishing another book until at least 2018.  I'm trying to maintain SOME sort of support for my currently published projects.  I didn't publish them for my own friggin' ego; I AM trying to make a living as a published author.

The relocation plans are going very slowly.  That job falling through was a major setback for me.  I should've been moved away from this blasted city by now; two years is long enough to be suffering.  It's not so much that I think my life/career would be so much better in Delaware, as I want to relocate for the strategic location that Delaware affords (not to mention the lower cost of living out there).  I can travel to the surrounding states if I wish, and participate in the various events that are held out there.

The more I deal with certain people here in NYC, and get burned in the process, the more that I feel that my time here has been overrun, and that I need to move on.  I feel like there is a negative cloud of energy hanging over me here, and is causing me to not succeed.  I was always more successful whenever I was OUTSIDE of NYC; the fact that I was able to even able to start a writing career is proof of that.  The possibilities of my success always seemed unlimited while I was out of NYC; my opportunities seem severely limited while I'm living here.  As it is, a recently had a cherished comrade read one of my novels, and write a glowing social media post in support of my  novel [The Chronicles of The Black Fist]; a bunch of people pressed the like button, but NOBODY bought a damn copy.  I don't even think any of my 'friends' from NYC even clicked the like/reaction button in support of the post.

I also want to do more with the Universal Africana Literary Arts Movement.  I want to do more real-world applications, such as holding showcasing events, and the such.  I also want to finally organize and hold the damned Expo.  I can't do that in NYC, not merely for the expense of it, but also the lack of physical support.  Cats always want YOU to do all of the work, but wanna take credit for helping you, when they never did.  A movement is not one man.

So, I'm progressing forward.  Looking to channel these negative energies, into some positive forward progression.  I'm going to continue to write my novels, and pursue my activism and advocacy for the literary arts.  Please feel free to support my work by buying copies of my novels and nonfiction works, or downloading the eBook versions of my works.  I'm on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and Books-A-Million.  I'm also on Kindle, Nook, iTunes, as well as other eBook carriers.

Uhuru sase, y paz.

Da Latest News.....

We're in interesting times right now, aren't we....?

Job Search
As of late, the job search continues.  I'd previously written about my desire to relocate, and an adventure that I'd had for a particular job interview called "Adventures In Job Hunting".  I finally heard back from that particular job, and I ended up getting turned down.  Oh, well...back to the old drawing board.  :-(

Local Events
I was able to go out, and enjoy the West Indian American Day Carnival out here in my hometown of Brooklyn (or, Brooklyn Carnival, as we call it out here).  Went with one of my peoples this year; it was cool vibez, but kinda on the boring side.  It wasn't like I remembered it to be when I was younger.  We left by late afternoon.

Celebrating Latino Heritage Month
I am celebrating Latino Heritage Month by re-releasing my first two books, Raise Your Brown Black Fist books 1 & 2, in eBook format.  Book 1 was always released in eBook format when it was first published, and I just recently converted Book 2 into an eBook.  I've been sending out e-blasts promoting their release.  So far, I have a potential interview in the works to promote those particular books, as well as my career as a writer (it's about blasted time!!!).  Just sent out the complimentary copies of my books, and hope to shoot the interview by October at the latest.

Brooklyn Book Festival
I was lucky enough to hook up with one of my peoples, and participate in the Brooklyn Book Festival.  I volunteered to work the booth for his organization, the Caribbean Cultural Theatre, and helped them to sign up people to their mailing list, and sell the books of participating authors of the organization (as well as sneaking in a few of my own).  It was a great experience, and I'm always glad to be back in my literary element.  It was an enjoyable weekend, and I got to feel like my old self again, if only briefly.

Future Projects
I'm getting my writing mojo back.  I'm currently writing three new novels; a sequel to "The Chronicles of The Black Fist", a YA novel that's pretty much an Afrocentric version of 'The Karate Kid' called "Walk Like A Warrior", and a science fiction novel that I've been working on for a hot minute called "Umoja: A Stellar Conflict".  I'm considering doing another erotica novel, and I'm fleshing out the storyline and characters now.

So, that's what's currently happening with me right now.  I'll keep you up to do ate on the TV interview, and the job search, as well as the new literary projects.  I probably won't publish them until 2018; I'm trying to take this currently time to promote my titles that I already have out.

Keep the fist raised.

Adventures In Job Hunting

For those of you that have been following my blog, you KNOW that I am desperate to get the hell out of NYC, and move on to greener pastures.  I recently had the opportunity to change my situation, and took the leap of faith...or, stupidity...to make that change.

Wrote a story about it.  Wanna hear it?  Well, a here it, here it goes....

I got a callback about two weeks ago for a job that I'd applied to that was out of state (Delaware).  After a week of playing phone tag, we finally got into contact with each other, and held an initial phone interview.  The phone interview went very well, and they asked me to come to the job in person for a followup interview.  I was pretty excited about that, and made my plans to escape this wretched ass city, and make my way to Delaware for the interview.

Problem #1....
My bank account ended up closing up.  I hadn't deposited any money in god knows how long, and since mothafuckas don't know how to buy a mothafuckin' book online, no money EVER got deposited in there.  Buncha broke ass people always talking shit about supporting you, but yet you never SEE a goddamn dime out of they ass-....

I'm sorry...am I venting...?

Anyway....

Come hell or high water, I was going to make that damn interview!  I was able to borrow money from one of my uncles, and a neighbor who is basically like a second mother to me.  I wasn't even concerned with where the hell I was going to stay, or anything like that...I was GOING to make that blasted interview!  I got the money together...packed a bag...and made my way to Greyhound that Friday morning of the interview.

Problem #2....
Greyhound sucks dick.  They can suck mine at my most hardest, when I haven't showered for a week....after a heatwave.  Nuccas wanna be on some new shit, charging tax.  TAX!  The fucking fare is $28 on your fucking website...HONOR THE DAMN PRICE!!!!  With the tax, it was ONE DOLLAR more than what I had.  Buncha bitch asses!  I had to beg people for one fucking dollar just to get on the bus.

Fucking HATE Greyhound!  I'll be fucking with the Chinese bus from now on.....when I get some cash flow again, that is...

So, I was able to get that extra dollar...pay for my fare...and just make my bus.  We pulled out of the Port Authority at 9:45am.  I was finally away from ratchet ass NYC, and on my way to Delaware for my job interview.

We made it to Delaware on time (noon).  I exited the buss, and started to walk around.  Since I had been doing online research about the city for a good year+, I had a fairly familiar sense of the city.  I'd found the street that  I needed to go to, and walked from the bus station to the job interview.  Gotta say...it was a HOT one that day!  Carrying around that heavy ass, big black bag was not fun!  Suffice it to say, I made it to my interview, early and on time, and knocked it out the box.  It felt good to know that my prior experience working in that field, and having done that particular job before (working food service in a hospital setting) actually puts me at the top of the candidates list.  So, the interview goes well, I get a mini tour of the work area/department, and make my way out of the door.

Problem #3....
My interview was done, it was only about 3:30 in the afternoon...wtf am I gonna do now?!  I have NO money...NO place to sleep...and NO return ticket to go back to NYC.

Shit...I'll just walk around, and explore.  Their downtown scene is tiny as all fucking hell.  Then again, I wasn't in that big of a city.  After all, Delaware IS a small ass state.  I found a lot of places that I was interested in looking for (colleges, landmarks, stores, organizations, businesses) with some of them being unfortunately closed at the time, or for the weekend.

So...what did I do afterward?  I crashed at one of the local parks.....LITERALLY!!!  Brother slept outdoors like a homeless person.  Of course, I was a bit nervous and skeptical; I ain't trying to hear getting jacked by some young bucks while I'm in another city...FUCK THAT!  Nighttime came...I found me a bench...propped up my bag...and brother got his snooze on.

Problem #4....
The next day (Saturday), I finished off the crackers that I'd brought with me to snack on for the bus trip.  I was still wondering how the hell I was gonna get something to eat, and get my ass home (at least to be there for the job acceptance phone call), when I saw some parks department workers setting up a stage.  They ended up having some sort of stop-the-violence rally IN THAT PARK, THAT DAY!  I was able to get access to some free food and drink, so I didn't starve that day.  I tried to get my hustle on, and sell a few copies of one of my book titles that I'd brought with me.

Got a bunch of interesting looks...but nobody bit.  Ain't that some shit?!?!  All I needed was TWO people to buy a copy so that I can hop on the Chinese bus to go home (saw where their office is down there); THREE people would've gotten me on Greyhound (buncha bitches), or on the Chinese bus with some added spending money.  Ain't none of them broke ass bought a copy!  FUCK that "good luck with your writing career" crap!  BUY a mothafuckin' copy so that I can go home!  Ya broke ass, nonreading ass, cheap ass, stingy ass bunch of-....

I'm sorry....am I venting again?

Anyway....

I ended up crashing at that park again Saturday night.  I got up on Sunday morning, determined to get my ass home that day.  I walked around to the YMCA, Salvation Army, and one or two other spots, and NONE of them could give me the money to get home, at least not until Monday.  Not to mention that, none of their mu'fuckin' corner stores were fucking open!  From around 7am to about 9am, I was looking around for a mf corner store, to try to get something to at least drink.  I'd made my way back to that park where I'd slept at, not in the best of moods, when a minibus pulls up to the corner.  The driver opens the door, and invites me to come with them to their church to hear the good word....and a free meal!

?!?!?!?!?  Free meal?
Eff it...I'll put up with them Jesus freaks for a few hours for some free food.  Brother was hungry!

I gave them a fake name (told them my name was John), went to their service, pretended that I actually cared, and got my grub on afterward.  They weren't bad people at all; they actually offer other services as well, such as transitional housing, and job searching services.  I was fortune to have met these people, especially because it ended up raining later that day.  I would've been stuck outside, and WET!  They helped me to get into a homeless shelter (at least for the night), where I was able to get some FOOD, take a SHOWER, and sleep in a BED for that night.

Honestly...I wouldn't wish that shelter on ANYBODY!  That was a shelter for people who where primarily dope fiends.  I was glad to shower, and have a bed for the night, but GOOOOOOD DAAAAAAAAMMMMMNNNNN!!!!

To wrap this up....I slept at the shelter that night....they pointed me in the right direction the next morning to get some help...FINALLY got some money in my pocket to buy a bus ticket (the Chinese Bus), and got my black ass back home to NYC on Monday.  Honestly, I KNOW that it was the Creator and the ancestors watching over me.  Too many good and fortunate things happened to me this weekend for it NOT to be the ancestors and Creator.  I've been trying to grow more in the spiritual sense, and apparently I've been able to do that, and see the results this past weekend.

SO....

These were my Adventures In Job Hunting.  I hope that you enjoyed this...and don't do the same stupid shit that I did.  I hope that I get this job, though.  I think I'll enjoy the city a bit more, and a lot better when I do.  Send a prayer out for me!  Or, sacrifice a chicken, or goat or something.....

This has been brought to you by the letter K...

Poets & Passion, A Carribean Literary Lime: Emancipated Voices

On August 3rd, the Caribbean Cultural Theatre presented their latest installment of their series "Poets & Passion, a Caribbean Literary Lime".  The theme for this event was "Emancipated Voices", considering that this year marks 50 years that a number of the island have been free and independent.  You were graced by the poetry and literary minds of Samantha Thornhill, Vladimir Lucien, and Tiphane Yanique, speaking on the campus of Medgar Evers College.

Since I don't live too far from the campus, I was lucky enough to be able to attend the event.  It was well attended, and the speakers DID NOT disappoint.  All of them read from their respective books of poetry, and we were graced with a short panel discussion and Q&A afterward.  Their individual works were all available for sale at the event, both before and after they spoke.  Having been a featured panelist/participant in a past Lime, I needed to come out and support my fellow writers/artists.  Plus, I have not been able to enjoy myself as of late, and felt the need to come out, and have my face seen.  It was also good, because I got to see a few people that I haven't seen in a while, due to my financial struggles.

I hope to be able to make it out to more events like this.  I'm still plugging away with the promotion of my own works, as well as focusing on relocating.  If I'm not going to be appreciated here in NYC, might as well find someplace else where my work will be.  ANYTHING is better than struggling like this.

Anniversary of My Return

Today marks the 2-year anniversary of my return to New York.  It's been a bittersweet experience to say the least.  It's been two years since I made the decision to return back to my home town, and pursue my career as an author full-time.  I honestly DON'T regret that decision, despite the ups and MANY downs that I've gone through over the past two years.  I like my freedom to pursue my passion, and achieve my dreams.  I've always wanted to live off of my creative talents, and I'm doing just that.

It was ten years ago that I packed up, and moved out of NYC.  I needed a break.  I wasn't struggling, I wasn't surviving.....I just existed.  I got up...went to my crummy job...busted my ass at work...came home, and crashed.  That's no life to live.  I wasn't pursuing my dream of working in film and television, nor was I happy about the state of activism in the city at that time.  I saw the handwriting on the wall, and just said, "PEACE OUT!!!"  I don't regret leaving; I seriously needed that change at that point in my life.  I was able to achieve a lot on my own, and outside of NYC.  I doubt that I would've reached any of the goals that I've reached since my departure, nor would I have accomplished what I have as an activist or writer, had I stayed in NYC.

I left 10 years ago to better myself.  I'm considering leaving again.  I'll most likely go back to the Mid Atlantic; it's strategically convenient as far as my plans as a writer are concerned.  I have a good number of connections in that region, and it's still accessible to New York.  I may not want to live here anymore, but the city (and state for that matter) has a lot of resources.  Hopefully, I can be out of here, and relocate by the late summer/fall.

So, here's to my anniversary.  Here's to better things to come down the pipeline.  May I continue to grow, and my career take the positive path that I intended for it.  Please continue to support me, and I look forward to continuing to inspire, and impress.

Supporting Akoma Day

One thing that I've always suggested was for Afro Latinos to embrace more African/Afrocentric cultural traditions and expressions.  This is one that I've come to learn about a few years ago, and is starting to pick up steam (at least from my perspective).  Akoma Day is an alternative to to St. Valentine's Day, and lasts five days, from February 14 to February 20.  They follow a certain set of principles and virtues that are mean to help build a strong relationship between two people engaged in the relationship.  It has a strong foundation in building, not only a strong relationship, but also a strong family bond.  You can equate it with Kwanzaa, as it follows the same guidelines.  I don't see this as a 'made up holiday', but something that we can make culturally relevant to our everyday lives.

The creators of the holiday have a website available that further explains the holiday, and has published literature about it to express their philosophy on how to build a strong relationship to, not only strengthen your marriage, but also to help build a strong community.  They have outlets and celebrations in several cities; you try to find one that is close to you, and attend one of their events.  Or, you can contact the founders/creators of the holiday, and coordinate and event right in your own city/state/region.

Happy Akoma Day!!!

Black History Month Event, and Literary Anniversary!!!!

**For Immediate Release**

Brooklyn, Ny--This Black History Month 2016 author/activist Kevin Alberto Sabio celebrates the 1 (one) year publishing anniversary of the release of his book "The Chronicles of The Black Fist"; a superhero action/adventure fiction novel.  Enter into the world of Nyerere Lewis, an educator-turned-crime fighter who dons the revolutionary colors after the murder of one of his mentees, and battles to clean up the streets of his hometown from both the criminal element, and corrupt cops alike. In this day and age of the Black Live Matters Movement, assaults on my civil liberties, and our right to vote, a novel like this is needed to provide the community with a voice, and let it be known that truly, deeply, and indeed #BlackLivesMatter.

Published through CreateSpace, The Chronicles of The Black Fist is available in paperback format through online retailers such as Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and Books-A-Million.  The novel is also available in eBook format through various carriers such as Nook, Kobo, Page Foundry, Scribd, and 24Symbols.

Please help author/activist Kevin Alberto Sabio to celebrate the month celebrating the publication of this revolutionary novel, as well as his sixth year as a published author.  Deemed appropriate for Young Adult audiences, and older.  ALSO...be on the look out for the author's upcoming novel "Drum Speaking: Tales From an Inner City Griot", a short story anthology due out late March/April!  Please support, and help to spread the word!!!

My Latest Updates....

Okay, I've been a bit quiet as of late....

There have been a couple of events going on out here in NYC that I wanted to go to, but couldn't make it out to.  It REALLY sucks to not have any money in your pocket.  I can't even afford to get on the local trains and buses just o handle my business.  If it's not within walking distance, I'm screwed.

Been putting in a number of applications for jobs.  Looks like I might have to go back to being a (wage) slave for a while.  I'm not generating ANY book sales, so I need to find an alternative way to make some money.  It's NOT something that I want to do, but a brother needs to live.  I've got shit that I need to do, and I can't do it, or get anything done without any money in my pocket.  Especially here in NYC where everything is super fucking expensive, I can't be without any money in my pocket.  Nor, am I able to properly invest in my writing career.

Of the good that's going on...the latest book is going well.  It's actually ready to be published, but I'm going to wait at least until March to release it.  Still deciding if I should release it as eBook first, and THEN publish it as a paper back, or just paperback it in March, and then convert it to an eBook.  Stay tuned for "Drum Speaking: Tales From An Inner City Griot", a short story anthology!  :-)

Also...I'm going to be featured in an ezine called "Es Mi Cultura".  It's an online publication created by mi hermana Tamika Burgess.  She will be featuring my first two works in the upcoming February edition of the ezine.  I'm really looking forward to that, and hope that it helps to boost my sagging writing career.

I've continued to reach out to other media outlets, but still nada.  I've emailed some online magazines to do reviews of my work, and I get absolutely NO response.  Yet...whenever i be sharing their shit all over Facebook, they wanna act like they're my biggest fans, and great friends.  Smgdmfh...

Still trying to keep the faith, and be positive.  I'm trying not to get embittered about the lack of progress in my writing career.  I'm hoping that things will change soon enough.  I'll keep you all updated to my progress.
