May Day, and the Pandemic Continues...

What's good, peoples?

Today is the first day of the month of May.  The year is chugging along at a steady clip, despite the pandemic.  The year is almost half done, if you think about it.  Quite shocking, huh...?  :-O

May marks the three-year publishing anniversary of my novel "Seductra: Web of Desire" (CreateSpace, 2017).

Three years ago, I published that novel, and it continues to be one of my favorites.  The project is available in both paperback AND eBook formats.  Please purchase, or even DOWNLOAD a copy of the novel, as well as my other projects.  If you get the opportunity, PLEASE also write a review of the book .

The Dual Release is still going on.  "Suicide Amy" seems to be fairing better that "Time Will Reveal"; I've had more purchases and downloads for that particular project.  Of course, this pandemic isn't helping matters, much.  At the same time, my eBooks are no more than $2-$3; not enough to damage your bank account.

My heart goes out to the indie bookstores that are suffering through this pandemic.  I've been reading some articles posted on Literary Hub about some of the trials and tribulations that a lot of indie bookstores are going through because of their shuttered doors.  Some are moving to do more online sales, while others are making deals with a new company called Bookshop.org; apparently a indie bookshop alternate to Amazon.com.  I believe that my titles are available on Bookshop.org through my eBook publisher Draft2Digital (don't quote me on that, though).  You especially saw the growth of indie bookstores in our Black & Latino communities, a much needed growth, at that.  That growth has been seriously stunted with this pandemic.  They might not survive the recovery, once this pandemic ends.  This really makes me sad; they are a much needed resource in our community, considering how Black bookstores have been ravaged in our communities over that past two decades...

I'm still getting used to my new laptop.  I've had to try to recover some fonts that I'd lost with my old laptop going kaput.  That sucks for me, not only as a writer, but also for some of my graphics that I do for my book covers, and other projects.  Not to mention, I had to get me a new video editing program to continue to produce "The Rough Draft".  I'll let you all know how that works out...

APRIL RADIO INTERVIEW On DOCK RADIO!!!!! :-D

It's finally been confirmed!!!  I will officially be a guest on OnShore, a radio show on Dock Radio, courtesy of The Dock Bookshop, based in Ft. Worth, TX!!!  YAAAAAAY!!!!

The interview will be taking place on April 16, 2020 at 7pm (Central Time).  The call-in number is listed on the flyer at 972-427-7795.  Hope that you all tune in!!!  I'm really excited about this!!!  I have to admit...it has been a while since I've been able to do any active promotion of any of my literary work(s).  I'm really looking forward to this interview.  We'll be discussion my latest two releases, as well as my writing career spanning the last decade.

I've been getting a few downloads for my books.  Not as many as I would like, but it is something.  Haven't checked for any recent sales (yet), but at least I've gotten a few downloads.  Hey...it's something.  If you can't get a physical copy, at least my work(s) are available in eBook format.

April Vibes During the Pandemic

It is now APRIL.  Next week will make it a month since the lockdown due to the COVID-19 coronavirus.  A lot has been shut because of the crisis, and people are stuck indoors.  Everybody is getting pretty antsy and are having anxiety issues.  As for me....I'm chilling.  I'm not that worried about it.  I stay safe, I'm a pretty clean individual, and I keep my head screwed on right.  Most people are confused by what's going on, and there is so much conflicting info out there, that people are starting to get really scared.  This 'unofficial Marshall Law' is what has ME concerned.  A lot of their government directives make no sense, whether local or federal.  But...that's another story for another time...

As far as April is concerned...it's been about THREE weeks so far since the dual book release.  As far as purchases/downloads are concerned, my sales are dismal; only TWO downloads so far.  That's quite irritating, considering that I've been pushing the dual release since December.  It seems like "Suicide Amy" is the book that's garnering the most attention.  Not mad at that, though.  The story is probably more relatable, since "Time Will Reveal" is Sci Fi/Action/Adventure.  Still...I want BOTH of them to get supported.  At the same time, considering the quarantine going on...I expected to have more sales for my books that that.  Reeeeeeeally make me wonder about the folks who claim to call themselves my fans and supporters....

On a happier note.... my short story anthology "Drum Speaking: Tales From An Inner City Griot" (CreateSapce, 2016) is celebrating it's four-year publishing anniversary this month.  Pretty happy about that.  It shows the diversity of my storytelling skills, dabbling into different genres.  That book is available in both paperback AND eBook formats.  Check it out!!!  :-)

On another good note....I might be holding a radio interview!!  I was contacted through email by a bookstore owner that has their own streaming radio show.  We're working out the details as I write this, so please keep your fingers crossed.  The interview SHOULD be taking place on April 16th at 7pm.  I'll let you guys know once the plans are finalized.  Wish me luck!!  :-)

Other than that, just trying to live up to my hashtag #AlwaysOnMyLiteraryGrind.  There's only so much that I can do, being trapped indoors.  Haven't really been motivated to write anything new, or work on any of my other incomplete projects.  I've mostly been in marketing/promotion mode, trying to generate some sales for the two new joints.  Trying to focus on sales for the eBooks, since that seems to be an easier way for people to gain access to them.

Viral Living During the Era of COVID-19

Soooooooooo.......

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of events have been cancelled, and people have been ordered/advised to self-quarantine.  In this day and age of 'social distancing', people have been asked to stay at home, and cancel public events.  That has hurt a lot of us independent creatives who are trying to make a living through our art.  Interpersonal interactions are a way for us to be able to make a living, and compete with  those that have commercial backing to support their careers.  This 'social distancing' is financially hurting us, and are forcing us to be more creative in the ways that we have to reach out to our potential audience.

Since COVID-19 will be a part of our everyday lives for the forseeable future, We need to find other alternative ways to get the word out about our works, and gain support.  I listed a few ideas in Episode #9, and hope that it helps.  I really had to think about my fellow members of the Universal Africana Literary Arts Movement, and how some of them may be suffering through these tough times.  I wanted to find some way to help them, as the majority of the events listed on the Spring Season SoE list have been cancelled due to the pandemic outbreak.  I wanted/needed to find a way to help support my brothers & sisters out there, my fellow creatives, and give them options and alternatives to help them to promote their work(s), and maintain their careers.

Hope that you guys enjoy the videos.  Here's to hoping that you'll all go out, and support my career.  Since we're all stuck indoors, nothing beats curling up with a good book to take your mind away from your recent & modern troubles.

It is now the month of MARCH!!!  The 1st third of the year is already upon us.  Man....time sure does fly nowadays, doesn't it...?  :-O

There's this new super virus out technically called COVID-19.  It's scaring the hell out of a lot of people.  Countries have shut down, and quarantines are in full effect.  Situations like these remind you of just about EVERY zombie apocalypse movie you've ever seen, and wonder just how true those flicks really were to reality.

Celebrating Latino Heritage Month

Paz, mi gente.

This past Sunday officially kicked off the start to Latino Heritage Month, on September 15th.  As always, I fight for the inclusion of Latinos of African descent, such as myself, to be included in such celebrations.  I always promote the publishing of my 2-book series "Raise Your Brown Black Fist: The Political Shouts of an Angry Afro Latino" (Authorhouse, 2010), and "Raise Your Brown Black Fist 2: MORE Political Shouts of an Angry Afro Latino" (Outskirts Press, 2011).  I usually try to make a point of going out to, and participate in, certain Latino festivals and events that are taking place in whatever city that I'm living in at the time.  This year, I've been feeling really run down by the day job, so I kept my celebrations to a solitary affair.  I'm hoping to make it out to a few other events that are going on around town, depending on how I'm feeling.  We'll see...

Since it is Latino Heritage Month, I usually would like to highlight something that I'm working on, or an event that is taking place either locally, or some other city.  I've been off my game, since I've withdrawn for the so-called Afro Latino Movement in recent years.  I've gotten really burnt out as of late, and feel a certain level of disrespect; I've been doing this type of activism for well over TWO decades; other have been doing it longer.....yet, those of us who have been in the fight for decades don't seem to be getting our respect, or props.  New jack media darlings are getting all of the shine, for NOT even doing half the work.  I guess that comes with this digital media age.  Whatever...

Viva mi gente, africano y negro!!!!  Soy negro, y orgullo!!!  Lets make our voices heard during this month, and give voice to our accomplishments, existence, and plight!!!

August News....

Peace, folks!  Yeah, I know....it's been a hot minute since I posted a blog.  My apologies.  The day job has been dominating my time as of late.  But now, I'm back with the latest news.

First off....it's the 4 year publishing anniversary for my poetry eBook "Spittin' Lyrics N Waxin' Poetic" (Draft2Digital, 2015).  Can't believe that it's been fours years since I published that particular book, my first eBook only project.  Sales haven't been impressive at all, but I'm proud of publishing it nonetheless.

It's the birth month for both of my parents.  Their birthdays (not to mention, their wedding anniversary) are in the same week & month. Feeling a little sad about that, as my mother is no longer here among the living.  That's gotta be hard on my pops.  Happy birthday, dad!!!

Hope that you enjoy the video!!!  I apologize for the poor sound quality, as I didn't realize that I was mumbling when I was talking.   I was tired when I'd shot the episode; that's what I get for shooting an episode after work.  I should've waited for one of my days off, but I was working multiple days that week, I just wanted to get the shit done.  I can hear my communications professors screaming in my ears about the "5 Ps"...  (Proper Planning Prevents Poor Productions).

On the Universal Africana Literary Arts Movement front, I've finally compiled the preliminary Schedule of Events (SoE) list, and emailed it out.  I still have some November events that should be added, but I need the info to do that, and the outlets haven't posted any updates to their websites.  Oh well....I do what I can.

Time Will Reveal (2020) is DONE!!!  The cover art is finished, and the book is ready.  I just need to figure out when I'm going to actually publish the book next year. I haven't picked a date, yet.  If you guys have any suggestions, feel free to let me know when you'd like ot see it come out.

Other than that,  I'm just trying to figure out a strategy for the upcoming fall, to finish out the year on a strong note.  I wouldn't mind doing some vending, or a few public readings of my latest book.  The promotions for my books have been lacking as of late, an unfortunate consequence of a having a day job with an inconsistent schedule.  Weekends are out, and my days off aren't always consistent; not to mention, my days off always fall on weekdays.  Oh well, I'll figure something out....

My 250th Blog Post

Not exaaaaaaactly a milestone, but it is a serious accomplishment.  :-)

Basically, I started this blog 7 years ago to coincide with the publication with my second book, "Raise Your Brown Black Fist 2: MORE Political Shouts of an Angry Afro Latino" (Outskirts Press, 2011).  It was another way for me to express myself about my political beliefs, as well as a way for me to additionally promote my budding literary career.  Nine books in, and 250 posts later....well, you get the drift.  ;-)   

On the horizon, my eBooks are now available through Baker & Taylor, thanks to my eBook publisher Draft2Digital.  That makes 3 outlets that has my works available to libraries, at least in eBook format.  My upcoming sequel to "The Chronicles of The Black Fist" (CreateSpace, 2015) will definitely be dropping next year in 2019.  The cover art is already done, and the final finishing touches are being made to the manuscript.  I'm thinking of a January release...

Dealing with a new day job, and the work schedule that comes with it.  It's MUCH better than my last one, but it's VERY labor intensive.  Brother ain't as young as he used to be.  Either I need to get my workout on, or they need some more bodies to help me to do this job. It's nice to be earning a paycheck again, but I'd rather be getting paid off of royalties, and appearances (panel discussions, speaking engagements, book tours, etc).

Other than publishing my sequel The Chronicles of The Black Fist: F.U.R.I. of the People, 2019 is up in the air.  I would definitely like to do more public appearances, via vending at festivals & book fairs.  Seriously gonna try to get my promotion on, next year.  Might try to invest in a manager, publicist, or business partner; this broke shit is for the mf birds!!!  I need to be able to make a living off of my art.  Punching someone else's clock for a paycheck just ain't for me.

Really gonna try to figure out what direction to take my writing career.  I have a few w.i.p. projects that I'm juuuuust not feeling.  I might scrap them...who knows?  I have other projects that I'm more interested in writing, namely turning The Black Fist into a book series.  I have a few other conversion projects that I want to do, as well.  I don't plan on only writing Afro Latino stories, especially if cats ain't gonna support my work.  Fuck that dumb shit...don't talk about it, and then NOT be about it.  You have someone like me putting out books with Afro Latino lead characters, but then don't go out and buy/download my works cause, what....I'm not with some major publisher?  I'm not getting mainstream recognition?  Fuck that!!  The underground/independents is where all of the talent, and the effort, is being put.  Don't be jumping on the bandwagon, and then not supporting things cause they're not being pushed by the mainstream machine!!

Anyway....

Here's to my continued career.  Continuing on the path of the literary word.  I'll do my best to maintain this blog, and provide intriguing content for you.  See you all at number 300!!!

September Updates So Far....

What's good, peoples?  How you feeling, mi gente?

So far...I FINALLY attended a Latino festival out here.  It was a 3-day event, but I only ended up attending one day.  It was rainy for most of that weekend, so I ended up missing the last 2 days, where they had musical performances, and a parade.  The one day that I attended wasn't too bad.  and no, I'm NOT going to try to compare their festival to anything in NYC.  I'm hoping to return next year, hopefully as a vendor this time to sell some of my book titles.  I'll let you know, next year...

The day job situation is up in the air.  All of a sudden, these people are now being uncommunicative.  All a brother wants is some answers.  I was supposed to have started last week Wednesday, but never got the call for what time I was supposed to come in, like they told me they would. I'm just chalking it up as a loss, and still continuing to job hunt.  Fuck it, I can't afford to sit still.  I've got debts to pay, and other shit that I wanna do that takes funds....

GREAT news from my eBook publisher!!!  They've made a deal with WalMart to distribute eBooks listed on the Kobo platform.  And...since ALL of my books are listed on Kobo, ALL of my eBooks are now available at WalMart!!!  YAAAAAAY!!!!  Now, nuccas have NO excuse as to why they can't support my work.  The shit is available at WalMart, now.  I hope that this helps to increase my sales.  The Creator knows that I could use an economic boost....

Been feeling a little down, as of late.  Been having some personal stuff happen.  Someone who I consider a dear friend is going through some tough times right now, and I feel quite powerless to help.  Since I'm not in that great a situation myself, there is not much that I can do to help.  It's another reason why this job thing is working my nerves; I'm not where I want to be financially, where as I could help out this friend, not to mention, finally get myself to where I want to be.  I'm sick of renting a room; I want my own flipping place!  I hate when I feel blocked, and stuck....stagnation is a killer.  I not moving forward, nor back.  Hopefully, I can shake this feeling, and improve my situation soon...

Well, that's about it for now.  Been doing the whole e-blast, email promotion for Latino Heritage Month.  Will be continuing to do it through the end of October.  After that, I have no idea.  I'm still planning on publishing my Black Fist sequel "F.U.R.I. of the People", but I just haven't set a date yet.  I'm also considering another conversion project of one of my other screenplays, but who knows.  My head's not really in the game right now....

Upcoming TV Interview

It's finally been confirmed.  I will be appearing on the local access television show called "Cultural Caravan".  I will be shooting my episode this coming Saturday, the 29th.  Hopefully, it will be airing the following weekend.  The show airs out here in NYC on WNYC Ch. 25-1.  I believe that they also rebroadcast on cable access out here on Cablevision Ch. 68.  I don't know any of the other channels that they broadcast out here on cable, just that they are also on Time Warner Cable, Verizon, and I believe RCN.  On WNYC Ch. 25-1 they air every Sunday at 5:30pm.

I will be appearing on the show talking about my first two books "Raise Your Brown Black Fist", and talking about Afro Latino issues and affairs.  Really looking forward to this interview; hopefully, it's the start to better things in my life.  I've been reaching out to many of the media outlets here since my return, and I finally got a callback.

Updates and info....

So, my birthday is coming up this coming Saturday, on October 8th.  I will be turning 42 years old.....

The job that I was originally applying for in Delaware fell through.  For whatever reason, they chose not to hire me though I was CLEARLY very qualified for the position.  Oh well, back to the drawing board.  Been searching for job on Indeed.com, and Craigslist.org.  I've actually recently gotten a response back.  Keeping my fingers crossed...

Continuing to work on my literary projects.  Working on three novels as I type this blog out.  They're going very well, and I should be finished with the first draft of one of them soon.  Of course, I'm not planning on publishing another book until at least 2018.  I'm trying to maintain SOME sort of support for my currently published projects.  I didn't publish them for my own friggin' ego; I AM trying to make a living as a published author.

The relocation plans are going very slowly.  That job falling through was a major setback for me.  I should've been moved away from this blasted city by now; two years is long enough to be suffering.  It's not so much that I think my life/career would be so much better in Delaware, as I want to relocate for the strategic location that Delaware affords (not to mention the lower cost of living out there).  I can travel to the surrounding states if I wish, and participate in the various events that are held out there.

The more I deal with certain people here in NYC, and get burned in the process, the more that I feel that my time here has been overrun, and that I need to move on.  I feel like there is a negative cloud of energy hanging over me here, and is causing me to not succeed.  I was always more successful whenever I was OUTSIDE of NYC; the fact that I was able to even able to start a writing career is proof of that.  The possibilities of my success always seemed unlimited while I was out of NYC; my opportunities seem severely limited while I'm living here.  As it is, a recently had a cherished comrade read one of my novels, and write a glowing social media post in support of my  novel [The Chronicles of The Black Fist]; a bunch of people pressed the like button, but NOBODY bought a damn copy.  I don't even think any of my 'friends' from NYC even clicked the like/reaction button in support of the post.

I also want to do more with the Universal Africana Literary Arts Movement.  I want to do more real-world applications, such as holding showcasing events, and the such.  I also want to finally organize and hold the damned Expo.  I can't do that in NYC, not merely for the expense of it, but also the lack of physical support.  Cats always want YOU to do all of the work, but wanna take credit for helping you, when they never did.  A movement is not one man.

Greetings, fans and followers!

Though most of my books are already available in eBook format (6 out of my 7 titles), They weren't previously available on Kindle.  I didn't really think much of it as an issues of consequence, until people started to reply on social media about me not having any of my titles on Kindle.  I had initially ranted about this before, I believe on LinkedIn, but you can't really fight against the industry standard.

Off again...On again

Okay...I've been quiet on here for a while...

Been going through some stuff.  My internet got cut off, so my internet usage has been sporadic at best.  It also made me realized just how plugged in I really am, as much as I'd like to think in opposition to that.  I do A HELL of a lot of networking online, and never realized how dependent I really was to using the web.  There have been a number of opportunities that I've missed out on because I've been unplugged.

Things haven't necessarily been going the way that I'd imaged them to go, since my return.  May 10, 2015 made it exactly one year since I've been back in NYC, and it has been quiet bittersweet.  I haven't had the support and traction that I thought I would get returning to my hometown.  It's made me seriously re-evaluate who I consider a friend; whether cyber friend, or real life.  As much as I go out of my way to support others, it didn't feel like that same level of support was reciprocated back.

Hell...I'm still on my grind, though.  I'm picking myself up, and dusting myself off.  I'm still writing my projects, and continuing to promote my current works.  I'm a little down now, but I will continue to rise.  I will continue to keep you all informed of my goings on.
