Funny Stories X: End of the series

Was having a problem adding this on to my Facebook page in the Notes section.  since the site wants to act up, I'll just post it here.  This is the very LAST entry of the series.  Of course, it took me FOUR YEARS to write it, lol, lol.  The series was based on experiences that I was going through in 2009, and to get back into my literary flow, I stored writing these snippets about my life.  Considering turNing them into my next book project.  I'll let you guys know how that works out.  ENJOY!!!

"Of All The Girls I Loved Before"

When people ask me about my time living in Richmond, sometimes I get asked if I have any regrets after having lived there for three-and-a-half years. Usually, I tell people that I regret staying there two and a half years too long, considering the sour taste that that place left in my mouth. But, if I have to be honest about regretting one thing about Richmond, it's about a particular lady that I left behind.

Wrote a story about it. Wanna hear it? Like a here it, here it goes...

For those of you familiar with my job at “Da Liquor Sto' ”, I was hating life something serious. The pay and the hours were crap, and my boss at the time was a fucking bitch. Luckily for me, one of my coworkers at the ABC store had a primary job working at one of the local hospitals. She knew that I needed the extra money, and that I wasn't getting it at the crappy job, so she offered to help me get a position at the hospital she worked at. I gladly jumped at the chance to get the hell away from that wretched job, and sent it an application. Considering the fact that I had applied to that same hospital once before and got shot down, I felt that my chances were better this time around now that I was being referred by someone who already worked there, and knows my work ethic. After jumping through a few hoops, and having a few strings pulled, I was hired part time as a PRN (glorified hospital kitchen gopher).

I have to admit, I loved that job! It wasn't so much the work, but I enjoyed my coworkers in my department. We came in, did the dirty work, and had FUN! Every morning while riding the bus on my way to work, I would always hear the theme music to the television show “ER” playing in my head. It was MUCH better than my liquor store job, not to mention that it helped to keep me AWAY from the liquor store. Every day my coworkers and I would joke and laugh, play around, and handle our business with getting the food out to the patients and hospital staff. Other than dealing with the occasional racist ass nurse (and some of them damn kids in our department), I loved that job. The paycheck was consistent, my supervisor “Tee” was cool as hell (not to mention foine!!!), I got THE HELL away from the liquor store, and I got to chill with my best friend at the job.

Let me stick with my best friend at the job for a minute...

“K-Dogg” was cool as all hell. Cat was all types of funny, and made me feel welcome from day one. If I ever felt homesick, I could always count on K-Dogg to make me laugh, reminding me of my peoples that I had back in NY. You never knew WHAT was going to come out of his mouth, especially if he started crackin' on people, especially our coworker Mr. Frank. Those two would go at it all day, every day, and keep us all in stitches. One thing about K-Dogg, though...he had a habit of pointing out certain habits that you have...

I never realized that I had a 'superhero stance' until he pointed it out to me. One day we're running food carts to the different units, and I was waiting for the elevator to go back to the kitchen to get the other carts. Apparently, I was in my 'superhero stance' while waiting for the elevator.

Yo, Kev...I saw Professor X on the third floor. He and the X-Men are gonna be battling Magneto. They want you to meet them up there to help out!

Okay mane, you know what...?!?! [Lip all upturned]

I also never realized how fast I can eat my lunch. Apparently, I can eat my entire lunch tray (entree, big bowl of salad, dessert, and large drink) anywhere between 5 ½ and 6 ½ minutes. Seriously. I know cause K-Dogg timed me! Several times!

Mane, Ima put you in them eating contests! We can win some BIG money. An I'll be your manager...taking my fifteen percent cut of your winnings!

Okay mane, you know what...?!?! [Lip all upturned]
K-Dogg liked and respected me a lot. He respected my political beliefs, and always gave me props for it. Of course, he would crack on me a few times, calling me the lost member of Public Enemy's S1Ws. He would be singing their song, “Fight the Power”, and imitate the dance moves that they would do in the video.

Okay mane, you know what...?!?!? [Lip all upturned]

Other than being a great friend, the best thing that he ever did was to introduce me to her...

Let's call her “Niecey”...

Niecey was one of the cooks in our department. She was also a transplant New Yorker, now living in Richmond. She had moved down several years ago, from the Bronx, and has been in love with the place ever since. Funny thing about me an Niecey...? It took us a while to get together. When I first started working there, we basically had a hi/bye relationship, speaking to each other only when spoken to. She pretty much kept to herself, and I was just trying to feel everybody out (though I was lusting after our supervisor Tee). Not to mention...she wasn't even in my top five of women at the job that I wanted to hook up with (obviously, my supervisor was number one on that list). It wasn't until K-Dogg formally introduced us that we really started talking to each other...
Funny thing about that first meeting. I was working as the pot washer that day, and K-Dogg had gotten us to speak to each other, being on that whole New York vibe. She came over, dropped off her pots for me to wash, and then we had a nice little conversation. Then after our conversation ended, she walked back over to her station, and I noticed something...

????????????

Damn...she got a REALLY nice walk!

That was the beginning of me and Niecey. She was older than me by a few years (okay...more than ten), and was a widow. But the more I got to know her, the more attracted to her I became. And for anybody who knows me, I usually wear my emotions on my sleeve, and let my feelings be know. Hell, my supervisor Tee was one of the first people to encourage me to talk to her like that.

I tried to be discreet in the beginning, but me being me, that act of tact didn't last very long. I ended up kinda putting myself out there one day in front the rest of the staff. It was on one of our weekends that we had to work. Since work is slower on the weekends (depending on the patient count), we have more added time to relax and chill. I was running carts that day with Mr. Frank, while K-Dogg was rotated onto pots. I remember that I was walking around, trying to find something to do until it was time to go pick up the carts. I walked over by Niecey's station, and asked if she wanted me to dump her garbage for her. She just smiled her pretty chocolate smile, and said that I could go with her to dump it.

Hell...I just wanted to spend some time with her. Of course I went!

It's a bit of a trek to get from the kitchen to the dumpster. You have to go through a few twists and turns of the hallways, and a short elevator ride to get there. I was walking along side Neicey, conversating with her along the way. After we turned the second corner, somehow she ended up pulling up ahead of me. That's when I noticed her walk again...

Man...she has a really, really, REALLY nice walk. That thing was swinging EVERY which way!

You send me swiiiiiiiiiiiiiiining! Oh, you send me swingiiiiiiiiiiin!

Hey! If YOU would've seen what I saw....you'd be acting the SAME way too! I started having a Charlie Brown moment at the same time.

Wah wah,wah wah wah waaaaaaaah!

Whatever we were talking about, I soon forgot it, and was too busy focusing on her...walk. Of course, I gave the occasional “uh huh” and “yeah” to let her think that I was paying attention, but I was too busy focusing on her...walk. After we reached the dumpster, I made sure to let her walk ahead of me just a little bit so that I could watch that walk of hers. We make it back to the kitchen, and she heads towards her work station. I'm still focusing on her...walk...when she catches me. She continues talking, stops, turns to me, and responds with, “...Don't you think so?”.

I pause. I finally look up.

She stands there, looking me dead in the eye...trying to hide the smile that I know she wants to wear. Yeah...I saw you looking back there!

BUSSSSSSSTEEEEEEEEEEED!

What could I do? I came clean.

“Okay, I gotta be honest...I ain't hear not one word you was saying...”
Her response? “Uh huuuuuuuuuh...”
“I'm saying though....I was distracted. Can you blame me?”
“Uh huh...okay...”

Niecey just shakes her head, and walks back over to her work station...finally smiling. I go back to my own work area. But not before I hit her with this...

“Hey Niecey...”
“Yeah...?”
“...You have a really nice walk!”
She laughs. “You so silly!”
“Hey...I like what I see!”

Of course, I end up doing that in front of most of my coworkers. I actually had one pull me aside and ask me point blank if I liked Niecey. Quite obviously, I wasn't doing a good job of hiding it. The good thing about it though...everybody like it , and encouraged it. Of course, personally, I wouldn't have given a shit WHO liked it or not; the only thing that I cared about was that I really cared about this woman, and wanted to get to know her better on a more permanent basis.

I wouldn't say that it was a whirlwind romance, but quite obviously, we were very attracted to one another. People had jokes about how I was always around her work area, just leaning around her, flirting, laying on the charm. K-Dogg caught me with a good one once; since sometimes some of the other cooks on staff give Niecey a hard time, I remember making a comment one weekend we worked about taking out anybody that was giving her a hard time during the shift. He started calling me “The Bodyguard” after that, singing Whitney Houston....

And IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII......wiiilll alllllwaaaaaaaays loooooove yooooooooooouuuuuuu....

Okay, really mane?! You know what.....?!?!?! [Lip all upturned.]

Things were going pretty good, and it was obvious that Niecey was just as attracted to me as I was to her. Hell, when I wrote my first book, she was the first person that I showed it to. Despite our age difference, it seemed like I was FINALLY going to have somebody special in my life for a looooong time. But anybody who know about my life, knows that with the good, comes the bad. We ended up hitting a rough patch....

She did something that really hurt my feelings. Not to mention, the job started cutting my hours (officially, I was only a part-time employee), so I was only there a few days a week, working only three hours a day. That really hurt me financially, especially since I had finally left that wretched liquor store job. Not to mention, I was stuck working the evening shift with them damned kids.

If I ever really, really wanted to move the hell out of Richmond, it was right then and there. I wanted out of that place, like last year!
That particular hell lasted almost three months. I was miserable, financially struggling, and now extremely lonely. I stepped up my efforts to move the hell away from Richmond, and get the hell away from this darkness that I was experiencing. I hated having my hours cut, and I hated working with most of those kids even worse. It got to the point that I really, really wanted to walk off the job. I left New York to get away from bullshit like this, and here I was, basically back where I started.

After a while, my hours started to pick back up. Having had my hours cut, Niecey and I really didn't get to see each other. Once my hours started coming back, whatever issues that she had had about us were now nonexistent. Issues be damned, she wanted us to get back to the way we were. It took a bit of effort on her part; I still felt hurt from the way that she had treated me before, and wasn't trying to go through that again. But, slowly but surely, we got back into each other's good graces again. I ended up getting her a few gifts, and even asked her out a few times ( she said maybe...maybe is good; it's not a 'no').

But alas....it didn't last....

One of the jobs that I had applied for in Maryland finally gave me a callback. It paid me more money, it was full time with benefits, NO weekends (which ended up being a lie), and it got me the fuck away from Richmond. Suffice it to say, I jumped at the chance. Now I had to break the bad news to Niecey. Quite obviously she was hurt that I was leaving, but tried to brush it off, and hide it. EVERYBODY knew that she was sad and hurt that I was leaving, and I felt like an ass for doing it. She had already lost her husband, and now that she had finally opened her heart to someone else, I hurt her again by leaving. She was somebody who I could have seen myself with for the rest of my life. Looking back in hindsight, even if I already knew the answer, I should have at least asked her if she wanted to come with me. She deserved as much to have a say in a decision as important as this. I felt like I started something that I knew I couldn't finish, and cheated her out of something better in life, some happiness.

SO....

I gave my two weeks notice, made my plans to move, and said my goodbyes. I got the contact numbers of all the people that I was cool with, and left on my last day with my head held high. Though I don't regret moving out of Richmond, I do regret not trying to make a life with Niecey. I often think about her, and reminisce over our time spent together. Sometimes, I think about hopping on the bus, and making a surprise visit at my old job, just so that I could see her one more time. The least that I could do is apologize to her for the way that I left. I just hope that she's now happy, and in a good relationship with someone who deserves her....

….Or, still be single so that I can have another chance with her.

This has been brought to you by the numbers o9, and 10.
And Facebook.

Forever my lady, (ohhh, yeah!)
It's like a dream...
I'm holding you close, keeping you warm, (Ohhh, ohhhh)
If this is ecstasy.......

Uhuru: A Stellar Conflict (WIP)

In honor of the upcoming African Liberation Day (May 25), I wanted to post another project that I am working on.  This is my grand fictional epic that I hope to make a continuing book series.  Enjoy!

Elder Minister Hausa Samburu was exiting the War Room of the Exodus, having just finished holding a video conference with a number of Star Liner commanders from the fleet. They were nearing Freedmen Prime, and needed to prepare themselves for the upcoming battle. A few extra ships had joined up with the fleet, totaling their fleet number to 550 ships. They still had a large number of Star Liners stationed at the border of Confederation space, just in case. If they needed reinforcements, or were unsuccessful in repelling the enemy, then those ships would be invaluable to their plans. This was quite honestly the largest military operation ever initiated by the Confederation, and they wanted to be fully prepared for anything that came their way. He headed toward the bridge, ready to prepare his crew, and the fleet, for battle. A few of the crewmen on board stop, and salute him as he passes them in the hallway. He returns the salute, and continues on.

He makes his way onto the bridge, greeting his Ras. The bridge crew comes to attention, and then returns to their duties. “Elder Minister...we have just reached the Freedmen Sector...!”, pipes the young Helmsman.
“Ras..”, he barks, “Order the fleet to power down their Dogon Drives! We'll continue on to Freedmen Prime under full power.”
“...Yes, Elder Minister!”
“Akoben...have all fighters waiting on standby. I don't want any surprises this time around...”
“...Yes, Elder Minister!”
You could hear the waning whines of the Dogon Drives as the ships power them down. They begin to slow their forward velocity a bit, now hurdling through under normal engine power. “Dogon Drives have been deactivated...the fleet has now slowed down to full power.”

“Deploy Akoben fighters, and arm all weapons systems!”
“...Yes, Elder Minister!”
“Djeli...radio all Star Liners, and tell them to initiate attack pattern Hannibal. All ships are to hold their positions until we reach Freedmen Prime.”
“...Yes, Elder Minister!”

The ships begin to shift their positions, and realign themselves. Various warriors throughout the fleet begin to prepare themselves for the upcoming battle. They scurry about to their battle stations, readying their ships for the expected engagement. The drums of war could be mentally heard throughout the roster of the entire fleet, the pulsating beat pushing them forward, enticing them on.

“Elder Minister...”, the Helmsman cries, “We've reached Freedman Prime's orbital airspace!”
“Akofena alert! Put it on the forward screen!”
“...Yes Elder Minister!”

He punches a few buttons, and the main screen projects an ungodly sight. Freedman Prime still stands before them, apparently still intact, but her orbit is filled with hundreds of unknown ships. The bridge is quiet, as her crew sits there somewhat in shock at the sight before them. Hausa finally finds his voice, trying to hide his surprise. “Magnify image...”
The Helmsman does as told, and they are able to get a closer, clearer picture of the fate of the planet. There is a debris field surrounding the planet, most likely the remnants of their Stellar Civil Defense Force and satellite system. At least their M.O. still seems to be consistent with their tactics at Freedmen Alpha IV, he thinks to himself. At the same time, it was still very eerie to see so many ships converged around the planet. “Magnify again”, Hausa commands, “I want to make sure that it's them...”
“It's confirmed, Elder Minister..”, his Akoben says after a moment, “They carry the same markings as the other ships. It's the Yurugu Union.”

The 'Yurugu Union' was the name that they had chosen to identify them as. It was one of the names that their ancient ancestors had once identified them as, and the Confederation leadership felt that it was only appropriate to label their attack force by such a name. Hausa grimaces, his anger now overcoming his initial unease. He was appalled at the site of so many alien ships arrogantly swimming through the planet's orbit. “Akoben...what's their status?”

“...They appear to have a force of about 825 ships in total...including those ships around her three moons.”
Great, he growls to himself, we're outnumbered. “...And Freedman Prime?”
“Planetary defenses are down...no sign of their Stellar Civil Defense Force. Most likely, they've been destroyed.”
“Djeli...?”
“...Communications is down. Their satellite network has apparently been destroyed as well.”
“...What about her moons?”
“I'm getting slight activity from Tubman Alpha...”
“What kind of activity?”
“...Unconfirmed. We're still too far away to get any clear readings or signals.”
“Could it be possible that a resistance force might have formed there...?”, the Ras asks.
“...It's possible. We would need to send in a recon force on the ground to confirm that-...”
“...-We'll get to that”, Hausa barks, cutting him off, “Open a radio frequency...all linguistic channels.”

The Djeli officer taps a few buttons on his console , and it chimes in response. “...Channel open, Elder Minister.”

“Attention...This is Elder High Council Minister Hausa Samburu of the Star Liner Exodus, representing the Universal Neo-Africana Intergalactic Diasporic Confederation. You have violated the sovereignty of the people of this world, who are our allies, and under our protection. You are hereby ordered to surrender your forces, and withdraw from this sector. If you do not comply with this order, your refusal will be met with deadly force.”

He turns to his Djeli Officer. “Keep repeating that message until they respond...or begin firing”, he commands, “Either way, we'll know their answer.”

“Heads up...!”, the Akoben yells out, “They're moving to intercept!”
“Looks like we got our answer...”, Hausa says, going to his chair.
“Akoben...”, the Ras barks, “Launch first and second waves of the fighters!”
“...Launching! Third and fourth waves on immediate standby!”
“All ships...”, Hausa barks, “Move in, and attack!”

Space immediately becomes filled with spectacular explosions, and multicolored streams of phaser fire. Both sides swiftly move in on each other, and the glorious dance of death begins. The Confederation forces valiantly throw themselves at their enemy, hitting them with everything that they have. The Union forces, on the other hand, continue to march forward, daring to challenge these newcomers on the battlefield. Their might was able to easily subdue the forces of the Nonaligned worlds, and these unknown newcomers should be no different. Of course, they have never faced all of the battle-classed Star Liners before; especially not all at one time.

“Akoben...”, Hausa barks, “Signal the other ships! Have the Hannibal-classes prepare a missile barrage. The fighters, Nzinga-Class, and Amina-Class Star Liners will draw their fire!”
“Yes, Elder Minister!”
“Order a battalion of Candace-Class ships to prepare for a volley of their own!”
“A secondary barrage...?”, his Ras asks.
“No. Tell them to fire their Solar Cannon. Let them learn what it means to tangle with the 'Searing Spear' of the Confederation!”

The Confederation fleet begins to realign itself, taking out as many ships as they can, preparing to enact their plan of action. Though not as powerful as their Candace-Class and Hannibal-class cousins, the Nzingas and Aminas open up a world of hurt among the Union forces. Their speed and maneuverability make it hard to get a weapons lock on them, and easier to evade the enemy's weapons fire. Having no defense against the fighters, the Union ships get quite battered by them, as if being swarmed by a hive of angry insects.

“Elder Minister...”, the Akoben replies, “The ships are in position.”
“...Fire missile barrage!”

The fighters and Star Liners quickly disengage, and an oncoming stream of missiles streaks towards the Union ships. They strike their targets, heavily damaging many of them. The Union forces stand undaunted, though, continuing on with their destructive mission.

“...Direct hit! Several enemy ships are heavily damaged!”
“They're still coming”, his Don calls out, “We've bloodied their nose, but they're not backing down yet...”
“...Prepare to fire the Solar Cannon!”

The Candace-Class Star Liners were the biggest and most powerful ships in the fleet, and their most powerful weapon, the Solar Cannon, was unmatched in the known galaxy. The ships were powerful enough to fire an intensely powerful beam of energy, encompassing the power of a small nova.
“...Solar Cannon fully charged. Target is locked!”
“...All ships have exited the firing zone”, the Navigator announces, “We have a clear shot.”
“...Fire!”

The ships hum with power, a bright light beginning to emanate from the crown of the Star Liners. The intensity of the light brightens more and more, until a beam of light harshly hurdles forward, incinerating all ships in its path. Many ships disappear from the battlefield, the intense heat from the multiple Solar Canon blasts searing all in it's path, illuminating space itself in the process.

“The enemy has sustained heavy damage”, the Akoben reports, “It looks like we've opened up a hole in their forces! We've made a path to reach her moons!”
“Contact the Redemption! Have her Ras take three battalions, and head for Tubman Alpha. If there is a resistance force there...they're going to need our help!”
“...Yes, Elder Minister!”
“Press the attack, and give them some cover fire!”, the Ras yells, “Our job isn't done yet!”
“...I'm on it!”

Several Star Liners streaked forward towards the moons, while the rest of the Confederation fleet continues to engage the remaining Union forces. Though slightly weakened, this fight was still far from being over. The Union ships still held a numerical edge on them, and were still very much in this fight. About eighty-six Start Liners are able to make it through, before the Union forces are able to regroup and close the hole. “Elder Minister, they've sealed the hole”, his Akoben replies, “They've cut us off from our forces heading towards Freedmen Prime's moons!” “They're on their own then, for now”, Hausa replies. He felt in his heart that this would only be temporary; they wouldn't be separated from their fellow warriors for long. It would only be a matter of time before the Union forces fell to them. “Keep pressing the attack”, he barks, “We'll deal with that issue when we get to it!” And so the battle ensues...

The Star Liner Redemption hurdles forward towards Tubman Alpha, followed by her garrison of ships. A contingent of Union ships has left her orbit, and are now on an intercept course to greet them. “Ras Assata...”, her chocolate female Akoben replies, “Union ships are heading on an intercept course on our position!” Assata Afeni, The Redemption's Ras, turns her onyx gaze to her Djeli officer. “Anything from the surface, yet?” “No, Ras Assata...”, he replies, “I can't tell if they're jamming us, or if the signal is just too weak to pick up from this distance.” “Very well, then...”, she says, returning her steely gaze to the main viewscreen, “We'll just have to continue to fight our way through this one...” She turns to her umber female Helmsman. “Helm...initiate attack pattern Ji Jaga!”

“Yes, Ras Assata!”
“All ships...prepare to engage the enemy!”
“Weapons fully charged, and standing by”, her Akoben reports, “Fighters are ready to engage the enemy!”
'Union forces are within weapons range”, her Don calls out, “It's now or never...”
“...All ships...attack!”

Both Union and Confederation forces combine to pummel and pulverize each other. They fiercely fire volleys, trading shots with one another, looking to batter the other either into submission, or oblivion. Space becomes filled with streaks of light, and violent explosions. Starships on both sides continue to duck and dodge, juke and jive, trying their best to outmaneuver their opponent. The Assatas and Shaka fighters swarm around the Union ships, battering them with weapons fire like angry insects whose hive had been invaded by a bungling interloper. The multiple metallic hides of the various Confederation ships provided a rainbow of death to the Union ships that they had destroyed, and were inflicting a world of pain on the remaining enemy forces.

“Let them continue to taste the cold blade of the 'searing spear' of the Confederation”, Ras Assata hisses, “All ships...attack pattern Zulu!”

The Confederation Star Liners realign themselves, and continue to mercilessly rain down their weapons on their enemy. Never before had an enemy felt the full weight of the Confederation's military might. They wanted a lesson to be taught; the first time you were lucky. That last encounter was barely a schoolyard skirmish, a few scrapes and a bloody nose; this is war! The Uhuru Kamau were caught off guard last time; this time....they were more prepared. This is not just a simple battle to them; this is their reason for being. It is who they truly are...warriors! This is their lifestyle, their essence; this is who they are. This is what they live for, trained for all of their lives...

Space continues to become illuminated with weapons fire, and fireballs of death. This tug-of-war for interstellar dominance is being fiercely waged by both sides, and neither was willing to give up an inch to the other. Ras Assata turns to her Djeli Officer. “Anything yet from the moon's surface?” He pauses before answering. “It's very faint...”, he finally responds, “But I am reading some activity from Tubman Alpha's northeast quadrant.” “That's correct...”, her golden female Navigator concurs, “Sensors indicate some enemy troop movements in that sector.”

“...A distress signal?”
“...Too weak to tell. They must be using some sort of really obsolete communications system, or something...”

A determined look crosses Ras Assata's face. “We need to get our ground forces down there.” She turns to her Akoben Officer. “What are the nearest Candace-Class Star Liners to our position?” Her Akoben momentarily pauses, looking down at her instruments. “On our starboard flank...the Yanga...the Maceo-Marti...the Sebastian Lemba...the Zumbi...and the Esteban Montejo. Covering our port flank is the Queen Amina...the Askia...the Mansa Musa...the Tarik...the Dahlia al-Kahina...and the Queen Nannie.”

“Radio those ships! Tell them to prepare their ships for the 'Aten Maneuver' against the Union forces!”
“Yes, Ras Assata!”
“Djeli...contact the rest of the garrison, and tell them to commence attack pattern Hannibal. That should draw their fire long enough for us to get into position.”
“Yes Ras Assata!”

Her bridge crew diligently followers her commands, and the Confederation's forces begin to realign themselves. The remaining ships in the garrison continue to batter the enemy's numbers, while the golden Candace-Classes align themselves in a circular fashion.

“All twelve Star Liners are in position, Ras Assata.”
“...Power up the Solar Canon!”

All twelve ships being to hum with power, the crown of their ships starting to illuminate, generating the radiated heat necessary to fire.

“...Solar Canon powering up!”
“Target their starboard flank, and prepare to fire.”

The ships continue to hum with power, building up to their maximum yield. The crowns of the ships generating a growing ball of light.

“Solar Canon at maximum power!”
“All attacking ships are breaking off their attack. The enemy ships are in position!”
“...Commence 'Aten Maneuver', and fire!”

All twelve ships fire an intense beam of light at the Union forces, their ships being devoured and seared by the heat of the light. Their ships are instantly incinerated, like gnats in the path of a flamethrower. The power of a small nova explodes forth, searing the darkness of space, leaving vacant a swath of space once full of starships. Those ships not instantly destroyed in the blast, lay crippled and unmoving, now a permanent part of the debris field. The faces of the Redemption's bridge crew brightens.
“Direct hit! We've broken a hole through their lines!”
“Don't get happy yet...”, Ras Assata warns, “This battle isn't anywhere near over...”
“We've opened a clear path to Tubman Alpha's northeast quadrant”, her Navigator replies, “No orbital defenses have been detected.”
“Ready the Terrestrial Drop-Shuttles”, Ras Assata barks, “We going in!”
“Terrestrial Prides have already boarded the shuttles”, her Akoben responds, “Standing by for launch, and land fall.”
“Helm...take us in!”
“...Yes, Ras Assata!”

All twelve Candaces move out, now heading for the moon's surface. The rest of the garrison continues to engage the enemy, providing cover fire for them to reach their destination. And NOW the fun REALLY begins....

"Nation Within a Nation: The Novel" (WIP)

Nelson Cameron sits in the kitchen of his one bedroom apartment.  It is a dreary day outside, with the sky being grey and gloomy, and the rain falling off and on all day.  He sits wearing his old Marines t-shirt and some sweats, nursing a half empty bottle of rum. He heavily sighs, looking to be on the verge of crying, feeling that his whole world is about to crumble around him...

What have I done...?!?!

The last fifteen years had not really been easy for him.  After (barely) graduating high school, he ran off and joined the Marine Corps to get away from it all; the streets, his family, the chaos that was this city.  His first eight years were blissful and progressive, having met a lot of people while climbing the ranks, and having traveled to many different places.  The last seven, however, were anything but; spending the rest of his time sitting in a jail cell for charges that he felt were bogus.  Having felt that he had been railroaded, it greatly soured his outlook on the military and his life in it.  The senior enlisted and officers liked abusing the power that came with their rank; being the street kid that he was, he wasn't going to sit there and tolerate their abuse or disrespect.  Respect was earned, not freely given away.  The NCOs and officers didn't see it that way, and used whatever means they had to 'put him in his place'.  They pushed one button too many, and a nasty fight ended with gunfire.  Nelson thought that his life was over, but then he received that one letter...

What have I done?!??!

Sanctuary was offered to him by the only friend that he'd ever had, that he's ever known.  His childhood friend, Garvey Gomez, had offered him a way out.  He and his organization Africana P.R.I.D.E. had taken over several abandoned blocks of the city, and created their own autonomous settlement.  A good third of the city that was once all abandoned was now rechristened "Freedmen Autonomous".  There, he was offered refuge, and a fresh start.  How could he refuse?  What was the alternative?  Totally self-contained, self-sufficient, and self sustaining, there was no need to look to the larger surrounding metropolis for any type of assistance or services.  It was, quite literally, home.

What...have...I...done?!?!?!

There is a sharp knock at the door, drawing his attention away from his internal misery.  He tries to be as still as possible, not making any noise, hoping that whoever it was would just simply go away.  He holds his breath, hoping that they wouldn't sense his presence inside.  The sharp knocking just continues, becoming more intense.

"Open up, Nelson...", a female voice barks, " I already know that you're in there!"

Oh no...not HER, he gasps to himself, let it be ANYBODY else but her!

The knocking just continues, becoming more and more intense.  Nelson heavily sighs, and rises from his chair.  He makes his way over to the front door, and momentarily braces himself before opening the door. He lets out a breath, steeling himself, and opens his door.

Assata Chisholm's obsidian form regally stands in front of him.  As Minister of Defense and Domestic Security, she is dressed in the full uniform of the Akoben/Akofena Brigade; the military wing of Africana P.R.I.D.E.  Nelson is shocked to see her standing there in uniform, dressing in all black with red and green trimmings.  Her eyes betray her overall beauty, shooting daggers into his soul.  This is not a friendly visit; his time had finally come.  Assata just continues to give him a steely gaze, emitting no other emotion than that of utter anger.

"...Assata!"
"That's Sister Minister to you!"
"Yes, I...I'm sorry, Sister Minister..."
"...-Get dressed, brother!  We're going for a ride...now!"

Nelson looks at her, shocked.  Assata's eyes emit nothing but pure darkness.  He knew that his time had come, and that there was no way out of it.  He swallows hard, and nods his head.

"Y-yes, Sister Minister."
"...In uniform!"

Nelson's eyes betray his increased level of fear.  This had to be official if she wanted him in uniform.  He simply nods, and turns towards his bedroom.  Assata just continues to visually tear him down, and enters inside.

*****

Garvey Gomez sits in his car, patiently waiting.  The rain had lightened up a bit, and has now become more of a misty spray.  The cemetery was actually quite beautiful; well maintained and quite spacious.  It was the natural border between Freedmen Autonomous and the larger metropolis.  It was the one border that he didn't always have to worry about protecting; the city would never encroach on their own dead.  It was conveniently out of the way, and away from prying eyes; whether the larger city, or his own residents. He had went through many great lengths to build Freedmen Autonomous, and he wasn't about to see it be brought down by anyone; from anybody outside or from within.

Freedmen Autonomous was Africana P.R.I.D.E.'s greatest achievement, once Garvey had taken over locally. He had banded together with local black businesses, other activist organizations, foreign nationals, and other like-minded people, and started taking over 'the vacants' throughout the city.  They rebuilt them, installed solar panels and wind turbines, and powered them independently.  They invited families, and business owners to repopulate the area; created their own public transportation system; created their own domestic police force, the Enforcers of Ma'at (EoMs); created their own schools and food markets; and everything else that they could conceive to become self sufficient.  Not only did they trade with black farmers, they also started trading with countries from within the diaspora.  When they started setting up borders and embassies, that was when they really became a threat.  He had been fighting off the city and state for a long time, and they were willing to do any underhanded tactic that they could think of to bring Freedmen Autonomous down; legally or otherwise.

Garvey's driver/bodyguard is in the front seat.  His alert eyes scan the perimeter, looking for anything out of order.  He sees a green cargo van entering into the cemetery at a rather high speed.  He perks up, catching Garvey's attention.

"Brother Prime Minister...!"
"I see them, brother.  Thank you..."

The van heads towards their position, it's rate of speed somewhat fluctuating.  It finally comes to a stop a few feet in front of them.  The side door flies open, and Nelson is tossed out of the van, his hands bound in front of him.  He roughly lands onto the ground, rolling a bit because of the impact.  Nelson looks somewhat roughed up, his face bearing bruises and cuts.  Garvey sees two other members of the Akoben/Akofena Brigade exiting the van as well, menacingly approaching Nelson.  Nelson slowly gets up, readying himself for the next round of battle with the two.  The two engage him in hand-to-hand combat, and Nelson is actually able to hold his own against the two, most likely because he has more room to maneuver.  Garvey somewhat smiles at the battle taking place, being momentarily impressed with Nelson's combat skills.  Nelson is able to overpower his two assailants with blocks, and grappling techniques, and throws one of his combatants into the other.  He victoriously stands there, waiting for them to try to engage him again in combat...

KRAK!!!

Nelson lies faced-down on the ground, slipping in and out of consciousness.  Assata stands over him, her gun pointed at his head, ready to fire.  Garvey's smile then disappears, the seriousness of the situation returning.  He sees the anger and the hurt in her eyes; shielded by the stoic exterior that she always displays.  Nelson wasn't just another warrior under her command; she deeply loved him.  He had always presented himself to be a loyal and dedicated warrior; a true believer of what Africana P.R.I.D.E and Freedmen Autonomous stood for.  He was given a second chance, and had won the loyalty and respect of his fellow warriors, as well as Assata's heart.

Garvey sighs, and exits the car.  He walks over to Assata, and addresses her.

"Sister Minister...."
"...Brother Prime Minister."
"It's okay, Assata.  I'll take it from here."
"Are you sure, Brother Prime Minister?"
'I'll be fine.  Just take your people, and go."
She pauses, continuing to stare Nelson down, "Your hands can't get dirty.  I can't protect you like this, Brother Prime Minister..."
"I just need to ask a few questions, Sister Minister.  I need to know."
"Okay...", she replies after a long pause.

Assata continues to shoot daggers into the back of Nelson's head.  She finally looks up at her two warriors, and motions with her head for them to leave with her.  They nod in agreement, and exit to the van.  Garvey watches them as they load into the van, and then pull out.  He lets out a sigh, and then turns his attention to Nelson.

Nelson continues to lie on the floor, faced down.  He lets out a soft pained moan, registering his consciousness.  Garvey momentarily watches Nelson on the ground, and then gives him a swift kick to his side.  This causes Nelson to flip over onto his back, moaning again in pain.  Garvey walks up to him, and pulls out his pistol, cocking it.  He then points his gun at him, a scowl now covering his face.

"Now...", Garvey growls, "I'm only going to ask you this one time..."
Nelson moans, trying to maintain his consciousness.
"Did...you...BETRAY...me?!?!"
Nelson tries to focus his eyes on him, fighting to maintain consciousness.
"...Yes!"

Blam...blam...blam!!!
